A Poem from CUSN Core

February 8, 2010 at 10:23 pm (Event)

During our retreat this last weekend we all free wrote answering the question “Why is it important to retain your community through CUSN”. We all took one line from it and created a poem. Here it is!!!!!

it is important for students to know that there is a program on campus that is filled with people who care

in [the] long run, those who come out of college tend to make the decisions in the worn, “real” world. We need any API voice in that. CUSN helps those get there

it is important to retain the AAPI community through CUSN because it offers the AAPI student body a safe space for students to get involved, mentorship for psychological support, and resources to help students succeed academically. AAPI students will have a voice

retaining API is important because it’s my community: my friends and family. I want my community to educate themselves in history, academics, and themselves: mind and body

i don’t want others to go through what i did

i hate the model minority myth

because i care about my community and CUSN is a space where people could meet other people who care about community

to give voice, visibility, & empower a community portrayed as passive, silent, & apolitical

if it’s fellow students helping you out, you don’t feel so intimidated about asking questions

i envision a relationship between APISA and CUSN that would harness a greater sense of political solidarity coming out of this space. Because i fear there is a political apathy towards AA/PI issues on and off campus

i got a lot of privilege and as I am developing my own identity, I realized the responsibility to support others

i feel the importance of learning/writing our story

its important to me because students like me can feel comfortable and supported

we are strong, we are talented, & we are effective to motivate and empower
